States that have not yet administered doses of COVID-19 vaccines received from the federal government need to explain what is happening to help coordinate efforts to immunize the population, said the president of the Chamber of Deputies, Arthur Lira (PP-AL).
“We have to pay attention to one fact. Why has Brazil distributed 34 million doses and we have only administered 18 million doses? I don’t believe it, I don’t think it’s possible that no governor or mayor is not vaccinating. But there is a deficit of almost 14 million vaccines in the official graphs,” he said during a speech.
“Our request is that the Ministry of Health urgently form an even stricter group to control this data. I cite the example of a state that received 3 million doses and vaccinated 1.5 million. Can the Ministry understand that it has a stock of 1.5 million and that the vaccine can be transferred, or should it understand that there is a delay in the vaccination information?”
“I don’t believe under any circumstances that there is any kind of ill will or bad faith in this. It is the confusion of this crisis, this pandemic, or the bureaucracy of information. It is an important control from a health point of view,” he said.
The number of Brazilians vaccinated with both doses of the COVID-19 vaccines available in the country – and who have therefore completed the immunization cycle – reached 4.1 million, or the equivalent of 1.9% of the population, yesterday, according to data released by the Ministry of Health. Those who have taken only one dose total 14.1 million, or 6.6% of the population.
The vaccination rate with the first dose shrank 51.3% yesterday compared to the previous day, to 152,489. In the case of the second dose, there was a drop of 55.7%, to 20,356.
At the moment, people from the so-called priority groups – people aged 60 and over, people with disabilities, indigenous peoples and health workers – can be vaccinated. There are a total of 77.3 million people in these groups – which means that 5.3% of them have completed the immunization cycle so far.
So far, 35 million doses have been distributed for vaccination throughout Brazil, and 18.3 million, or 52.2% of the available quantity, have been used.
Brazil is only vaccinating its population with the Sinovac vaccine – packaged by the Butantan Institute – and the AstraZeneca vaccine – packaged by the Oswaldo Cruz Foundation (Fiocruz). Both require two doses to achieve maximum effectiveness in preventing COVID-19.
