Behind the scenes, the president of the Chamber of Deputies, Rodrigo Maia (DEM-RJ), began to admit to leaders of the Centrão and the Opposition that he could run for reelection for a fourth term in command of the House, reports CNN Brasil.
According to the broadcaster, Maia has said that this is not his agenda now, but that he would be willing to run for re-election, if he has the approval of the Supreme Federal Court (STF) and if he is a consensus candidate for the Centrão and the Opposition.
Until then, the current president of the Chamber had been rejecting the possibility, even behind the scenes, of running for re-election to lead the House in the election that will take place in February 2021.
Last week, Roberto Jefferson's PTB filed a lawsuit with the STF asking the Supreme Court to block the reelection of Maia and the president of the Senate, Davi Alcolumbre (DEM-AP).
Initially, the case was assigned to Minister Celso de Mello, but he declared himself unable to participate. The case was then reassigned to Gilmar Mendes, who sent the case to the STF plenary for a decision.
Gilmar is one of the Supreme Court justices with the best political dialogue with the National Congress. According to Maia's allies consulted by CNN, he and the minister have an excellent relationship.
When contacted by the broadcaster, the current president of the Chamber did not comment.
