An extremely bizarre crime has left many in the United States with a flea in their ear. A 74-year-old sailor saved a man from drowning twice and then shot him dead.
The strange occurrence was recorded on Lake Keowee in Salem, South Carolina. Nathan Drew Morgan, 29, fell without a life jacket from a jet ski.
He was only saved after being rescued by the elderly man, who was sailing with his wife — it took them two attempts to get Nathan out of the water.
Once on board, however, Nathan became agitated and even threatened and attacked the boat's owners. Frightened, the elderly man ended up shooting Nathan in the chest, killing him.
In a later statement, the elderly man said he feared “for his life and that of his wife while he was being attacked.”
Local prosecutors have announced that they will not charge the elderly man with any crime, believing the shot was fired in self-defense.
However, the case is unlikely to be fully resolved. A police statement said Nathan may have been drunk or “wanted to get back on the jet ski”.
“This is crazy. Definitely unexpected here, for sure,” Brandon Thomas, a local resident, told WSPA-TV.R7
