Last Wednesday (15), former president Lula once again expressed his desire for the PT to resume dialogue with evangelicals, with a view to the next elections. This and other statements were made during an interview for 'TV do Trabalhador', linked to the party still influenced by him.
The idea, as previously mentioned, would be to “rescue” evangelicals who had already voted for the PT in previous elections and ended up becoming voters for the current president of the Republic, Jair Bolsonaro, or who also voted blank or null.
During the interview, Lula spoke more about the subject and even joked, saying that he has “the appearance of a pastor or priest”.
“I think there is a space to discuss religion in this very large country. I want to get involved. I even have a way of being a pastor, I have a way, I have white hair… I can be a pastor or I can be a priest, if only the church would end celibacy I would be in,” he said.
Lula even stated during the interview that his government was the one that treated evangelicals the best.
“I want you to go and ask your Edir Macedo, your Crivella who treated them better, who treated them with more respect and more decency,” he said.
During the 2018 elections, a large part of the evangelical leaders declared their personal support for Jair Bolsonaro, stating that the left's ideology does not match the message of the Gospel.
Highlighting that he will resume dialogue with evangelicals, Lula said that he will “talk to these people again”.
“I’m going to talk to these people again, the PT needs to talk. The PT has a lot of evangelicals. What you can’t do is stay quiet, what you can’t do is have someone tell a lie about you and you pretend you didn’t see it. You have to go after them, with respect, but you have to go after them,” he said.
Even though he defends a dialogue with the segment and even jokes that he has a “pastor’s way”, Lula criticized pastors, stating that they ask for money “aggressively on TV”.
“I see the aggressiveness that pastors talk about on some television programs, it’s very aggressive, almost violent. You ask someone for money in an aggressive way, you promise someone a miracle in an aggressive way, and then if a miracle doesn’t happen, you’re still the one to blame, because you don’t have faith. What kind of story is this?” he said.
Being a pastor
The Bible itself has several attributes regarding what can characterize a true pastor and, by all indications, they go beyond a mere “style”, as the former president mentioned.
Although the term “pastor” is not always clearly mentioned, the texts are addressed to those who wish to respond to a calling of spiritual leadership.
