In a press conference lasting almost two hours in Washington DC, on Monday night (11/25), Economy Minister Paulo Guedes became agitated when commenting on the speeches of former president Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, recently released from prison, and stated that the words of the PT leader lead to the intensification of the actions of the Bolsonaro government.
“It is irresponsible to call anyone to the streets now to cause chaos. To say that we have to take power. If you believe in democracy, those who believe in democracy expect to win and be elected. Don’t call anyone to destroy anything in the streets. Or is democracy only when your side wins? When the other side wins, within ten months you call everyone to destroy the streets? What responsibility is that? So don’t be surprised if someone asks for AI-5. Didn’t it happen once? Or was it different?” said Guedes, referring to the 20-year period of military dictatorship that the country experienced.
When mentioning Institutional Act No. 5, an instrument of the military dictatorship issued in 1968 that closed Congress and revoked individual freedoms, Guedes is referring to a statement by Eduardo Bolsonaro, federal deputy and son of President Jair Bolsonaro. At the end of last month, Eduardo stated that there might be a need to reissue AI-5 if the left became more radical.
