There is no doubt that one of the most important inventions to date has been the television. It has changed the behavior of all humanity and there is practically no home without one of these devices.

In Brazil, it appeared around 1950 in São Paulo and the following year it was installed in Rio de Janeiro, which was then the capital of the Republic. They were generally found in the form of a console by RCA Victor, which in addition to the device also came with a radio and a record player with a needle.

There were few houses that had them, and it was a sign of status for those who already had such a feat. With it, the so-called TV neighbors appeared: friends or acquaintances who would show up at the house of someone who had a TV as if they were not interested, to watch a program.

But the machines were always breaking down and there weren't many technicians to fix them. They were as rare and as expensive as family doctors. The programs were broadcast live and the production was very poor.

Turn the TV on and off

Over time, everything evolved. Videotape was a very positive change, which allowed Chico Anysio's programs, for example, to present different characters that entered the lives of Brazilians.

Then came interstate broadcasts via retransmitter antenna, and then satellite broadcasts with the 1970 World Cup. Two years later, the long-awaited color television. In 1980, a very important addition to television was already seen: the remote control.

With the remote control came the addiction of compulsively changing channels. In 1990, televisions began to be sold with remote controls, but most of them only served to turn the TV on and off. Nowadays, it is impossible to imagine a television without a remote control.

The history of the remote control

In 1950, Zenith from the United States launched a wired remote control that could be used to mute the sound during commercials, and it was a huge success. In the first year, 30,000 units were sold, making the inventor a fortune.

But the invention had a problem: in a room with too much sunlight, the remote control would stop working. That's when an Austrian engineer, Robert Adler, also from Zenith, modified the remote control, at the time called Flashmatic, and called it Space Command.

This happened in 1956 and in this year Zenith established the creation of the remote control and the inventor became famous. Then the remote control evolved into what we know today.

Remote control apps: four options for Android and iPhone

If you have a smart TV and TV box, you can easily download a remote control app and easily navigate through your TV channels. One of the main advantages is that you can type using your mobile phone's keyboard, which is much faster and more intuitive than those available on smart TVs.

Remotie: remote for Samsung TV is a remote control app created for Samsung TVs and you can download it on both your Android and iOS. The platform has a smart and elegant interface, translated into Portuguese, which helps a lot in navigation.

One of the features is the virtual touchpad that allows you to control games when playing directly on your TV. It is not an official Samsung app, so it does not work on all TVs, but most apps manufactured since 2017 accept its commands.

Smartify is a remote control app for LG TVs that works on all smart TV models by entering a PIN code. It has many features, but most of them are only available in the paid version, including typing with your phone's keyboard, controlling video playback, and accessing apps.

But the free version allows you to access settings, go to the TV's home screen and adjust the volume, which already makes using the device much easier. The app is also not official, but it has versions for iOS and Android.

Roku and Universal TV Remote

Official remote control app for devices with the Roku OS system, Roku allows you to search using your cell phone's keyboard, and allows you to include channels in the media center from your cell phone, transmitting content from your phone to your TV, among other very interactive functions.

Universal Remote TV is already a universal remote control app, and is compatible with Samsung and LG TVs, but the developer has already promised support for more brands. The platform allows you to control the contents of your smart TV with some paid functions, and the free version contains ads. This app is only available for iPhone.
