After signaling in recent days that he intended to veto the 2 billion reais electoral fund approved by Congress – which he considered “unfair” -, President Jair Bolsonaro changed his stance and stated the opposite in a live broadcast on Facebook this Thursday 19th. Alongside the Secretary of Fisheries, Jorge Seif Jr, and the president of Embratur, Gilson Machado, the president declared that he has legal recommendations to sanction the fund and avoid a risk of impeachment.
“I am awaiting an opinion from my legal counsel, but the preliminary is that I have to sanction [the electoral fund]. If they want me to run the risk of impeachment, fine, we will take the risk and veto it…”, commented Bolsonaro.
The president considers that the veto could be implicated as a “crime of responsibility”, violating “political and individual rights”.
“This issue of the special campaign fund is in the law. Its value is also in the law, there is no fixed value, but it says that it cannot be lower than it was two years ago. We have a Constitution that says that acts by the President of the Republic that violate the Federal Constitution, especially against the exercise of political, individual and social rights, are crimes of responsibility,” explained Bolsonaro.
“Congress may understand that I, by vetoing, violated these constitutional provisions and may initiate impeachment proceedings against me,” the president added.
When justifying the now likely sanction, however, Bolsonaro voted to say he was against the fund.
“People are always asking me to veto it. My opinion is that there should be no money from the fund for anyone. But if we put them on an equal footing, there is the new in politics and the old… the old will have the right to the electoral fund and the new will hardly have it. So it will be much easier not to renew it,” he assessed.
The president said he was a “slave of the law” and complained about criticism from deputies about his position regarding the fund. Without mentioning names, Bolsonaro commented on “a fat girl” and “a fool” who are attacking him.
“There is a fat girl from São Paulo who is maliciously criticizing me, a fat girl. And there is a congressman. The congressman or say his name because he is not fat. Samuel Moreira is criticizing me because I was the one who proposed 2 billion. There is also a fool criticizing me,” he declared.
