A celestial body about 150 km in diameter is heading towards Earth, and within ten years it is expected to come even closer. This is the largest comet ever discovered in the history of science. The body is 31 times larger than most comets observed by astronomers.
This comet was first identified about seven years ago, but only now have scientists been able to make such an identification. The comet was named Bernardinelli-Bernstein as a way of honoring the scholars who discovered it, one of whom is from Brazil.
Initially, this comet was identified as a dwarf planet, but as it got closer to Earth, researchers were able to observe it more closely. Each time it gets closer to Earth, they are able to do more studies and learn even more about how the solar system was formed.
Garty Bernstein, who was one of the scientists who discovered the celestial body, reported that they have the privilege of discovering the largest comet ever seen, or at least larger than any other that has been well studied. He emphasizes that the images were captured early enough to allow us to observe its evolution as it heats up and approaches Planet Earth.
According to the scientist, this comet has not visited the solar system for more than 3 million years, a considerable number on a scientific scale.
