What would you do if you found out you were married to your own father? This was a real situation, even though it may seem like a case that only happens in fiction. The protagonist of this story told everything in detail.
Valerie Spruill had her life turned upside down when she learned after a medical examination that the man she had married was the father she had never met. By the time she found out, the man was dead.
Spruill had spent part of her life hearing about her absent father and bits of stories from her husband. But until then she had never understood what it was all about, until she put the facts together.
Valerie went to talk to an uncle and he, whose identity was not revealed, decided to tell her the whole truth: that her niece's husband was, in fact, her father who had left the family many years ago.
“It’s devastating. It can destroy you,” Valerie said in shock. The woman, who lives in Doylestown, Ohio, United States, and discovered the facts in 2004, still wonders how she could have ended up in such a situation:
“I don’t know if he knew or not. That conversation didn’t come up,” Valerie said. “I think if he did know, there’s no way he would have told me,” added the American, whose husband died about six years before she found out the full truth.
Valerie confirmed her paternity when she took a DNA test. To do this, she removed hair from one of her dead husband's brushes. The test proved that she and the man were indeed father and daughter, which left her in a panic.
Valerie has suffered from a number of issues since she learned of her husband's paternity. She has suffered two strokes and was diagnosed with diabetes. She says she tells the public her story in order to release her pain.
The American woman says that the whole situation was caused by the family's secret. Valerie says that she met Akron after her first marriage, from which she had three children. She says that he was very kind and that he provided for the household's needs. According to the woman, the two lived well in their marriage.
Valerie was taken to live with her grandparents when she was three months old. For a long time, she believed that her grandfather was her father. Her mother, who became pregnant with her when she was 15, was living in Akron at the time.
Valerie's mother, who was a call girl, visited the house sometimes, but everyone said she was just a family friend. What no one mentioned anymore was her father's name, until the real story was told by her uncle.
