Paulo Guedes was elected the best Latin American Economy Minister of the year by the English magazine GlobalMarkets.
The award ceremony was held last Saturday night in Washington. However, Guedes did not go to the USA, as he is paying attention to the vote on pension reform in the second round in the Senate next Tuesday.
The magazine has been in existence for three decades and is circulated during meetings promoted by institutions such as the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB).
According to the publication, Guedes has been making changes in Latin America's largest economy since January 2019, with a more business-friendly administration.
“If the change to a more business-friendly management generates high expectations, there was great uncertainty as to whether a government led by a polarizing president would be able to achieve the necessary reforms”, points out the text of the publication, highlighting that the last few years have been full of scandals of corruption, political impasse and a drop in investments for Brazil.
As the magazine highlights, one of the Brazilian minister's advances was to take the Social Security reform to Congress, already approved in the Chamber of Deputies and about to be voted on in the second round in the Senate.
Furthermore, the reforms proposed by Guedes, points out GlobalMarkets, are seen as fundamental to improving the structural prospects of public finances in the medium and long term.
Mohammed Maait, from Egypt, was elected the best minister in the Middle East and North Africa region. Sonny Domingues, from the Philippines, was chosen as the best minister in Asia-Pacific and Ken Ofori-atta, from Ghana, was chosen as the best in sub-Saharan Africa. From Central and Eastern Europe, Djamshid Kuchkarov from Uzbekistan was elected. Finally, for the Caribbean region, Keith Mitchell, from Grenada, was elected the best Finance Minister.
