The Dom Bosco Center, a Catholic organization, has just sued Netflix and Porta dos Fundos. The reason is the Christmas special produced by the group of comedians, which is being shown on the Netflix platform, seen by religious people as an act of vilification of the Christian faith.
The public civil action filed by the Catholic entity seeks compensation corresponding to the revenue from the film and approximately 2 million reais that must be transferred to a fund of the Ministry of Justice.
The Porta dos Fundos channel often makes videos ridiculing Christians and biblical characters. In the past, it was even sued by evangelical leaders for this reason, but they ended up winning in court, claiming that they asserted their “freedom of expression”.
However, there is also a legal provision in Brazil against the vilification of the faith of others. Aware of this, the Dom Bosco Center, a Catholic association in Rio de Janeiro, is asking for compensation of R$1,400,000.
The Catholic association's claim for compensation is R$ 1 for each view on YouTube. Published in October 2016, the material has already been viewed almost 5 million times.
