On his Twitter account, former president Fernando Collor, without showing any shame, apologized to Brazilians for the confiscation of savings announced on March 16, 1990.

“Guys, I understand that the time has come to speak here, with even more clarity, about a delicate and important subject: the freezing of assets at the beginning of my government. When I took office, the country was facing immense economic disorganization, due to hyperinflation: 80% per month!” Collor began.

“The poorest were the ones who suffered the most, they lost their purchasing power in a matter of days, people were dying of hunger. Brazil was at its limit! While preparing the initial measures of my government, I became aware of an economically viable but politically sensitive plan, with a high chance of success in combating inflation. It was a very difficult decision. But I decided to take the risk. I knew that I risked losing my popularity and even the Presidency, but eliminating hyperinflation was the central objective of my government and also of the country. I believed that those radical measures were the right path. Unfortunately, I was wrong. I would like to apologize to all those people who were harmed by the freezing of assets. My team and I did not see a viable alternative at the beginning of 1990. We really wanted to get it right. Our goal was always the good of Brazil and Brazilians,” he argued.
