Hurricane Dorian is at the top of the one to five scale that determines hurricane strength.
South Carolina Governor Henry McMaster has ordered a mandatory evacuation of the state's entire coastline, which is in the path of Hurricane Dorian. The measure is expected to affect about 1 million people.
The storm hit the Bahamas archipelago in the Caribbean, with winds of up to 285 kilometers per hour, and is expected to reach the southern United States between Monday (2) and Tuesday (3).
According to the US National Hurricane Center, Dorian will move “dangerously towards the Florida coast,” reports ANSA.
The eye of the storm is over Grand Bahama, the northernmost island in the Bahamas, where people have been advised to stay indoors. Winds have eased to about 165 mph (265 kph).
